It is helpful to base your puppet’s character on a family member or friend or acquaintance. The more closely related the puppet’s character is to a real person, the more believable the puppet will be. Don’t think of the creation on the end of your hand as a puppet: relate to them as a real person. Project yourself totally into that character. If you are having a conversation with your puppet, you will need to practice quickly changing from your personality to puppet character and back again. This can be even more difficult of you have 2 puppets going, and you are in the centre having a conversation! If you accidentally forget which character you are supposed to be and start using the wrong voice, quickly change to the correct one. Chances are that the audience will not have noticed anyway.
