The story of Harriet has different levels. On one level, it is the tale of a young girl who connects with her great-great-grandmother whom she didn't get to meet, and appears to be watching over her. There are also stories within the main story, including a
sub-plot with Harriet having to sort out the relationship with her personal bully. Later on, the two unite forces against another bully who is causing problems. Harriet learns life lessons from the stories read to her by a local librarian, who, unknown to Harriet at the time, is her great-great-grandmother. This impacts her in a life changing way: lukewarm about reading to begin with, a passion is born to help others in the future with their reading and imaginations.
