Writers will often say that naming their characters can be the hardest part of structuring a novel. My own protagonist, Harriet Cooper, a ten year old girl, started life as an eight year old boy, with a very different name. When I decided to change the age and gender of my main character, I went through several options. What seemed right didn't really seem to fit. Eventually I settled on Harriet Cooper, as my Honda Civic is named Harriet, and I live in Cooper Street. Of course, I then had to name subsequent characters: her best friend Will Taylor, her school teacher, her family and friends, along with enemies. The process became easier as I drew on names from real-life people. The teacher was easy: he was my 5th and 6th grade teacher in 1968 and 1969. I altered other names from family and friends. Others I simply invented. If you are struggling with creating a memorable moniker, check out the link below on Pinterest on naming your character/s. Happy choosing!
